Major update for Claude AI in Google Workspace: It will now work directly within Docs, Sheets, or Slides..
Dario Amodei, CEO of the AI company Anthropic, has made the AI chatbot Claude even more useful for Google Workspace users. Claude AI can now operate directly within Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. The biggest benefit of this update is that users will no longer face the hassle of repeatedly opening or switching between different browser tabs to use AI while working.
**Reads and Edits Files via Sidebar**
Announcing this new feature on the social media platform X, Anthropic wrote, "Claude now works inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and the files open within Claude itself. In Google Workspace, Claude sits in a sidebar next to your file, reads the open document, and edits it right there. You can approve each edit before it is applied."
**How can you use this feature?**
This new 'Claude for Google Workspace' add-on is currently available in public beta for all paid Claude users. Users can access it by following these steps...
Step 1: Users can download the add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace.
Step 2: Open any Doc or Sheet, click on the extension, select Claude, and then click 'Open Claude' to activate it.
How it works: It opens in a side panel and immediately understands the text, cells, or slides you have selected to begin working.
**What can Claude do in Docs, Sheets, and Slides?**
In Google Docs: It can correct grammar, rewrite paragraphs, or modify headings. A key feature is that the surrounding original formatting remains intact during this process.
In Google Sheets: It can write complex formulas, create pivot tables, generate native charts, and add new tabs. Additionally, it can clean and analyze data, then record the results directly into the spreadsheet.
In Google Slides: It can create new slides that align with the layout and theme of your existing presentation. Furthermore, it can detect and fix issues such as overlapping elements, text extending beyond slide boundaries, or readability problems.
Users retain full control: 'Ask Before Edits' mode
Anthropic has also prioritized safety and user control.
Default mode: By default, the tool does not apply changes immediately. Instead, it displays an approval card in the sidebar; changes are made to the file only after you review and approve them.
Auto mode: Users who wish to complete tasks quickly without interruption can enable the 'Accept All Edits' mode, allowing the tool to finalize tasks directly without repeatedly seeking approval.
