UPPCL: Amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding smart meters in Uttar Pradesh, the government has provided significant relief to low-load electricity consumers. Now, in UP, the electricity connections of consumers with a load of up to 1 kilowatt will not be disconnected for 30 days, even if their account balance goes into the negative. Some relief has also been extended to consumers with 2-kilowatt connections; their connections will not be disconnected as long as their negative balance remains within a limit of ₹200.

**Electricity Connections Will Not Be Disconnected Under These Circumstances**
Energy Minister A.K. Sharma has issued directives stating that, under no circumstances, shall the electricity connections of consumers with a load of up to 1 kilowatt be disconnected before the completion of a full one-month billing cycle, even if their account balance turns negative. Furthermore, during this one month—and before any disconnection—consumers will receive five notification messages on their registered mobile numbers, providing them with a timely opportunity to make the necessary payment.

**3 Million New Electricity Poles Installed**
In view of the rising summer temperatures, Minister A.K. Sharma has instructed officials across all districts to expedite ongoing electricity-related infrastructure works. He noted that extensive efforts have been undertaken to bolster the power supply infrastructure throughout the state. To date, approximately 3 million new electricity poles have been installed, and the capacity of transformers has also been significantly augmented. Minister A.K. Sharma has asserted that comprehensive measures have been implemented to ensure an uninterrupted power supply in UP throughout the summer season.

**When Will the Notification Messages Be Sent?**
The Electricity Department in UP has currently placed a temporary moratorium on the installation of smart meters. For consumers who have already had smart meters installed in their homes, orders have been issued prohibiting the immediate disconnection of their supply in the event of a negative account balance. The department has established a specific notification protocol: the first message will be sent when the remaining balance drops to 30% of the total amount; the second when it reaches 10%; the third when the balance is completely exhausted; the fourth when the balance turns negative; and the final message just as the connection is on the verge of being disconnected.
