Major changes coming to ATM machines; several new features to be introduced..
The lengthy banking procedures and the wait for debit cards to arrive by post are often a source of inconvenience for people. However, a new facility is being launched that will allow you to issue a personalized RuPay card directly from an ATM. This initiative is part of three financial inclusion measures introduced by the Department of Financial Services (DFS) at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. This new open-source, Android-based ATM solution is designed to enable customers to obtain personalized RuPay debit, credit, and National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC) directly from the machine.
The system is being designed so that customers can get personalized RuPay debit, credit, and NCMC cards right from the ATM. In other words, you can acquire these cards using the ATM itself and subsequently use them to withdraw cash.
This will eliminate the long wait associated with debit and credit cards. Essentially, you will be able to dispense not just cash but also ATM cards from the machine, and then use those very cards to withdraw cash.
**Public Sector Banks Conducting Evaluations**
Currently, public sector banks are in the process of evaluating this solution. Nine banks are assessing the system in collaboration with the NPCI and ATM manufacturers. These nine banks include the State Bank of India, Bank of India, UCO Bank, Central Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, Slic Small Finance Bank, and Airtel Payments Bank. The participation of major public sector banks and private payment institutions will help test how this solution performs across different banking models and customer segments.
**Efforts to Develop Additional ATM Services**
Efforts are also underway to develop a range of other services for ATM machines. ATMs are being upgraded to facilitate services such as cheque deposits, account opening, and loan applications. This could enable banks to utilize these machines as major touchpoints for digital banking.
