WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a design change to its Android app. The company is currently testing a new design for the app's bottom navigation bar. Instead of being flush against the bottom of the screen, the bar will appear as a distinct, floating element. It will feature rounded corners, giving it a look similar to the WhatsApp design found on the iPhone.
According to WABetaInfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp features, the new bottom navigation bar has been spotted in version 2.26.38.10 of WhatsApp Beta for Android. However, simply installing this beta version will not immediately reveal the new design; WhatsApp has not yet activated it for beta testers, and the feature remains in the development stage.

What will the new bottom bar look like?

WhatsApp is testing this design in both light and dark themes. Currently, the change is more noticeable in Light Mode.

Design similar to WhatsApp on iPhone
The new Android design will reflect elements of the iPhone app. On iOS, WhatsApp introduced a floating tab bar as part of an update aligned with Apple's "Liquid Glass" design language. This design features rounded corners and a see-through (translucent) effect.

WhatsApp is preparing to bring a similar floating shape and rounded design to Android. However, it remains unclear whether the see-through effect found on the iPhone will be included in the Android version.

This is because the Android app's design is developed with Google's own design guidelines in mind.

A major change after three years
WhatsApp shifted the main tabs of its Android app to the bottom about three years ago. That change was tested in 2023 with beta version 2.23.10.6. Now, the company is preparing to revamp the bottom bar's design once again. Currently, this feature is under development, and WhatsApp may alter the design before releasing it. The company has not yet announced when the new floating bottom bar will be available to general Android users.
