Major Apple Watch Health Update: Sleep Apnea Can Now Be Tracked in India Too—Find Out How It Works..
Apple has introduced a new Sleep Apnea Notification feature for its Apple Watch users in India. This feature has been introduced to further enhance health tracking, enabling users to quickly identify signs of breathing-related issues while they sleep.
**What is the Sleep Apnea Notification feature?**
In 2024, Apple received approval from the U.S. FDA for a Sleep Apnea Detection feature on the Apple Watch. This feature has now been made available in India as well. Its primary function is to identify potential signs of moderate to severe Sleep Apnea in users. If a user's breathing pattern becomes repeatedly irregular during sleep, the feature will send a notification advising them to consult a doctor for a check-up.
With this addition, the Apple Watch has solidified its position not merely as a fitness tracker but as a robust health monitoring device.
**What is Sleep Apnea?**
Sleep Apnea is a medical condition in which a person's breathing repeatedly stops and starts while they are asleep. These interruptions can lower oxygen levels in the body and negatively impact sleep quality. Often, individuals are unaware that they suffer from this condition.
According to Apple, over one billion people worldwide are affected by Sleep Apnea, and in many cases, the condition goes undiagnosed. If left untreated, it can lead to high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and other long-term health complications.
**How does the Apple Watch detect signs of Sleep Apnea?**
Apple has explained that this feature operates with the assistance of the accelerometer sensor embedded within the Apple Watch. This sensor records subtle wrist movements during sleep, which may be indicative of breathing interruptions or irregularities.
**How does the feature work?**
The operation of this feature involves two distinct stages. In the first stage, the Apple Watch records data regarding breathing irregularities occurring during sleep throughout the night. In the second stage, this data is analyzed over a period of 30 days. If frequent and significant breathing disturbances are detected during this period, they may indicate signs of moderate to severe Sleep Apnea. If the system continuously receives such signals, a Sleep Apnea notification is sent to the user via the Health App. Subsequently, the user can consult a doctor and undergo further testing.
