Lost your mobile phone? Take these steps in the first 15 minutes to minimize damage
The first 15 minutes after losing your smartphone are crucial. Block your SIM card, suspend banking services, lock your phone, change passwords, and file an FIR. These steps will protect you from financial loss and data theft.
Today's smartphone is more than just a device for making calls. It stores bank accounts, UPI apps, digital wallets, identity documents, private photos, and emails. Therefore, losing or having your phone stolen can directly lead to financial loss and a privacy crisis. Cybersecurity experts believe that the first 15 minutes after losing your phone are the most critical. Taking the right steps immediately can prevent fraud and data theft.
First, block your SIM card
The first step after losing your phone should be to call your mobile network provider and block your SIM card. This stops OTP messages, prevents calls and SMS, and prevents fraudsters from accessing any financial apps using your number. This is the biggest security measure.
Freeze bank and UPI services
Blocking your SIM card alone is not enough. Immediately contact your bank and request a temporary suspension of mobile banking, UPI, and card services. Also, inform wallet providers like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. This quick action can prevent unauthorized transactions.
Remotely lock or erase your phone's data
If your phone is connected to the internet, use Android's Find My Device or iPhone's Find My iPhone. This allows you to lock your phone, display a message on the screen, track its location, and, if necessary, erase all data. If there is little hope of recovery, deleting the data is the safest option.
Change your passwords immediately
From another device, change the passwords for your email, banking, social media, and cloud accounts. Your email account is the most important as it is the key to other services. Use strong and unique passwords and enable 2FA (two-factor authentication) wherever possible.
File an FIR and block the IMEI
Filing an FIR with the police and blocking your phone's IMEI number is extremely important. This renders the phone useless on the network, increases the chances of tracking it, and helps in filing an insurance claim. An FIR also provides legal protection against any future fraud.
Will you let the damage stop or escalate?
Losing your phone is stressful, but panicking only makes things worse. The steps you take in the first 15 minutes determine whether the damage is contained or escalates. Blocking your SIM card, suspending banking services, locking/wiping your phone, changing passwords, and filing an FIR – these five steps protect your financial security and personal data.
