ChatGPT Lockdown Mode: OpenAI has introduced a new "Lockdown Mode" to bolster the security of ChatGPT users. This feature is specifically designed for individuals and organizations that handle sensitive information and wish to minimize the risk of data theft. According to the company, Lockdown Mode helps defend against "prompt injection" attacks—a rapidly emerging threat facing modern AI systems. Enabling this mode significantly restricts ChatGPT's access to the internet and external services.

What is Lockdown Mode?
According to OpenAI, Lockdown Mode was introduced to prevent sensitive data from falling into the wrong hands. Prompt injection is considered a major threat in the AI landscape; in such attacks, adversaries attempt to manipulate AI models using instructions hidden within websites, emails, documents, or other content. In many instances, this can cause the chatbot to reveal sensitive user information. The new Lockdown Mode is designed to mitigate this specific risk. While the company clarifies that the feature does not eliminate prompt injection, it significantly restricts the final stage of the attack—the exfiltration of data to the attacker—thereby reducing the risk of data leakage.

What changes with Lockdown Mode?
Once Lockdown Mode is activated, several popular ChatGPT features will either cease to function or become restricted. Live web browsing will be limited to cached content, meaning the latest information may not always be available. "Deep Research" and "Agent Mode" will be completely disabled. Code generated within "Canvas" will lose internet access, and the ability to download external files will be disabled. Additionally, integrated agent experiences—such as those for finance and shopping—will no longer be available. ChatGPT will stop displaying images in standard responses, and the image generation feature will be disabled. However, settings related to memory, file uploads, chat sharing, and model training will remain unaffected.

How to Activate Lockdown Mode
OpenAI has announced that Lockdown Mode is being rolled out for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and self-serve business accounts.

Once the feature becomes available, users can easily enable it. To do so, first open the ChatGPT app or website, then navigate to Settings and open the Security section. Here, you will find Lockdown Mode under the Advanced Security options; users can activate it with a single tap. The company states that while this feature may not be necessary for everyone, it can prove to be a crucial layer of added security for professionals, institutions, and organizations handling sensitive data.
