LinkedIn: Beware if you have a LinkedIn account! Your data will be used for AI, here's how to avoid it...
If you have an account on LinkedIn, then today's news is especially for you. Starting today, November 3rd, Microsoft's professional networking platform, LinkedIn, will begin using your data to train its AI models. The company has decided to update its Terms of Service, which will use not only your profile details but also your public posts to train AI-powered features on the platform.
It's worth noting that this data may also be shared with Microsoft and its affiliates for targeted advertising. It's a relief that the company won't use your private messages for AI training, meaning your messages are safe.
Why is LinkedIn using data?
LinkedIn has stated on its service page that starting November 3rd, 2025, it will use some user data in certain regions to train content-generating AI models, which will improve the user experience and help connect you with better opportunities on the platform.
This page states that only users' public posts and profiles will be used for this purpose; your private messages will not be used. It also states that if you do not want our data used, you can opt out in Settings.
Users from these countries will be affected.
Data from users in the European Economic Area, European Union (EU), Canada, Switzerland, and Hong Kong will be used. LinkedIn profiles in India are also used for AI training data by default. This means that Indian users who have not opted out of the relevant data-sharing settings are having their profile data used to improve LinkedIn's AI models without their knowledge.
How to Avoid It
Log in to your LinkedIn account, then click on your profile picture on the left. Then click on Settings. Here, you will see the Data Privacy option. Tap this option.
In the Data Privacy section, you'll see the Data for Generative AI Improvement option. Click on this option.
After tapping this option, you'll see that this feature is already on. If you don't want LinkedIn to use your data, turn it off.
