Just One Mistake Could Cause Your AC to Explode! These 7 Simple Tips Will Save Your Life..
Amid the ever-increasing heat in Delhi, the risk of air conditioner-related accidents is also increasing. Recently, a retired IAS officer died in the Hauz Khas area after an AC unit exploded. This incident has raised concerns among traders and market associations. The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), Delhi's leading business organization, has described the matter as serious and advised all traders and factory owners to exercise caution. The CTI has provided some tips to avoid the risk of an AC explosion.
CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal has issued an advisory regarding ACs in Delhi's 768 market associations and 56 industry associations. The organization has advised approximately 2 million traders to immediately inspect the ACs in their shops and factories. The CTI says that while AC explosions may be rare, when they do occur, the damage is significant. Therefore, it is crucial to take timely action instead of being careless. The organization has urged people to have their ACs serviced only by trained technicians.
According to CTI, the most common cause of AC explosions is gas leaks and sparks. Gases like R32, R290, and R22 used in ACs are slightly flammable. If gas leaks from a pipe and a spark occurs nearby, such as a short circuit or loose wiring, the risk of fire and explosion increases. People often perform welding or other electrical work near the AC, further increasing the risk. CTI stated that even minor negligence in such cases can prove fatal.
Another major cause is incorrect gas filling. Local and untrained mechanics often fill ACs with cheap, flammable gas to save money. In some cases, even LPG is used, even though the AC system is not designed for this. This causes a rapid increase in pressure inside the machine and can cause the compressor to explode. CTI advises people to only have their gas refilled by an authorized or trained technician and to obtain a bill for every service so that responsibility can be determined in case of a problem later.
According to CTI, a major cause of AC explosions is compressor overheating. If the AC filters are dirty, the condenser coils are clogged, or the gas is low, the pressure on the machine increases. In such a situation, the compressor continues to heat up, and its temperature can reach over 200 degrees Celsius. This constant overheating increases the pressure inside the machine, creating the risk of explosion. Therefore, it is essential to have the AC cleaned and serviced regularly to ensure proper functioning.
Electrical faults are also a major cause of AC accidents. Loose wiring, faulty capacitors, and voltage fluctuations can cause short circuits. If gas is leaking at the same time, even a small spark can cause a fire. This risk is further exacerbated by the increased humidity during the monsoon season. CTI urged people to avoid using old wires, faulty plugs, and overloaded circuit boards. If necessary, have the wiring inspected by an electrician to prevent a major accident.
CTI explained that many fake and inexperienced technicians fail to vacuum the system before filling it with gas. This process is crucial as it removes air from the system. If air remains, the combination of oxygen, gas, and high pressure can cause an explosion. The organization warned people that choosing a cheap mechanic just to save money can cause significant losses. Following proper technical procedures is crucial for ensuring safe AC operation.
CTI also offered some important safety tips for businesses and the public. It is advised that ACs should always be serviced by a trained technician and receive a full bill. Avoid storing oil, garbage, or any flammable material near the outdoor AC unit. If an AC smells burning, hears a strange noise, or begins to form ice, immediately shut down the unit and disconnect the power supply from the MCB. CTI says that most AC blasts in the summer are caused by improper repairs and cheap gas. Don't risk your life and millions of dollars in damage just to save a little money.
