In a statement, the company noted, "We are excited to soon bring usernames to WhatsApp, enabling people to connect with new friends, groups, and businesses without having to share their phone numbers."
Feature May Be Optional
According to reports, the username feature is expected to be optional, allowing users to continue using their phone numbers if they prefer. The objective behind this move is to avoid disruption and prevent users from migrating to rival platforms.
Over 500 Million WhatsApp Users in India
With a user base exceeding 500 million, India remains one of the largest and most critical markets for WhatsApp globally. According to a report released in February, social media platforms exert a significant influence on 77 percent of retail purchasing decisions made in India. Furthermore, Meta's platforms play a pivotal role—accounting for up to 96 percent—in the realm of "social discovery."
This report, a collaboration between Meta and the Retailers Association of India (RAI), highlights how short-form videos and content creators are increasingly instrumental in helping products reach consumers. According to the report, 97 percent of consumers watch short-form videos daily, and approximately 60 percent of the total time spent on Facebook and Instagram is dedicated solely to watching videos. The report also states that 72 percent of product discovery takes place through the messaging platform WhatsApp. This means that people are predominantly using WhatsApp to learn about products, make inquiries, and gather information.
