Jio Platforms, which was recently listed on the stock exchange, has become the country's second most valuable company with a market capitalization of approximately ₹13 lakh crore. Market analysts estimate that Jio shares could be included in the Nifty 50 index by September 2027 and in the BSE Sensex by December 2027. Upon its inclusion in the Nifty 50, global and domestic passive funds are expected to purchase shares of the company worth approximately ₹36,500 crore. This potential investment is about 21% higher than the ₹30,213 crore raised by the company through its IPO. Analysts believe that passive funds could deploy this capital into Jio shares over a period of 11 to 14 months.

To include any stock in the Nifty 50, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) evaluates its average free-float market capitalization over the preceding six months. The index undergoes a rebalancing review twice a year—in March and September—based on data from the six-month periods ending January 31 and July 31, respectively. As of October 29, Jio Platforms had a total market capitalization of ₹13.1 lakh crore. According to the NSE, its current free-float market capitalization stands at ₹28,524 crore. At the time of listing, only 3% of the company's equity was made available for public trading.

Free-float to increase once the lock-in period ends.

According to a report by Moneycontrol, approximately 32.5% of Jio Platforms is held by major investors—such as Google, Meta, and General Atlantic—in the form of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). According to Mannat Gandhi, a database analyst at PL Capital, approximately 299.78 crore pre-IPO shares—representing a 32.5% stake—will emerge from their lock-in period in April 2027.

Additionally, the lock-in for about 7.25 crore 'anchor' shares will expire between November 2026 and January 2027. This will bring the total number of unlocked shares to 307 crore (33.3%). If the stakes held by PIF, Silver Lake, KKR, Meta, and Google are also considered part of the 'free float,' this figure could rise to 35.5%. Gandhi further noted that if the share price sees significant appreciation and market conditions remain favorable, existing investors might consider selling 1–2% of their holdings.

Entry into the F&O segment is a mandatory requirement.
For a company to be included in the Nifty 50, its shares must be traded in the Futures and Options (F&O)—or derivatives—segment. Market experts believe that Jio Platforms could become eligible for inclusion in the F&O segment by June–July 2027. By April 2027, the company will also have completed a six-month track record of regular trading. If the necessary regulatory approvals are secured prior to the index review, the company’s entry into the Nifty 50 could become possible in September 2027.

Potential weightage in the Nifty and Sensex.
According to analyst estimates, if the share price hovers around ₹1,480 and the free-float market capitalization reaches ₹4.8 lakh crore, Jio Platforms could command a weightage of approximately 4.2% in the Nifty 50. Meanwhile, in the BSE Sensex—which comprises only 30 companies—its potential weightage could reach up to 4.9%. The free-float market capitalization of BSE (which was recently included in the Nifty) stands at Rs 1.42 lakh crore, while that of InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) is Rs 1.05 lakh crore.

Fund managers believe that even after the lock-in period expires, aggressive selling in the open market by large investors is unlikely. Under favorable market conditions, even if existing investors were to sell a 1–2% stake, it would only serve to improve the company’s trading liquidity. Furthermore, if Jio’s AI and enterprise businesses justify its premium valuation relative to Bharti Airtel, then an estimated Rs 36,500 crore in inflows from passive funds could provide long-term strength to the stock.
