Android Phone Storage: We are all familiar with RAM and storage. Storage is where your phone saves photos, videos, music, apps, and other files, whereas RAM is utilized by apps and the Android system. Nowadays, smartphone brands are launching models with up to 1TB of onboard storage. Despite this, seeing a "Storage Full" message on an Android phone can be frustrating. When storage runs out, you cannot download new apps, files, photos, or videos. The easiest and most immediate way to free up space is to delete unnecessary files. This creates room for new data and files and can also help maintain the smartphone's performance.

Ways to free up storage on an Android phone

First, check how much storage is currently being used on your Android phone. To do this, go to **Settings > Storage** and select any category. Here, you can see what is occupying the most space—this could include photos, videos, apps, downloads, and other files.

Free up storage automatically

Some Android phones come with a "Smart Storage" feature. When storage runs low, this feature automatically deletes copies of photos and videos that have already been backed up to Google Photos. This eliminates the need to delete files manually one by one. To enable this feature, go to **Settings** and tap on **Storage**. Then, select **Free up space**, tap on the **Menu**, and turn on **Smart Storage**.

Manually delete unnecessary files.

Users can free up storage by identifying and deleting large files that are no longer needed. Deleting such files helps create space and can improve system performance. You can also check for files you no longer need and delete them manually.

Open Settings.
Go to Storage and select "Free up space."
Choose the category from which you want to delete files.
Go to "Select files."
Select the files you wish to delete. If the relevant category isn't visible, select "Browse."
Select a specific file or choose all available files.
Then, tap "Move files to Trash."
If your phone's photos and videos are backed up to Google Photos, you can also remove the copies saved on your phone. These backed-up photos and videos remain safe in Google Photos, and you can view them again whenever your Android phone is connected to the internet.

Another way to free up space is by removing downloaded media, as these files can quickly fill up storage. You can remove Google TV downloads as follows: Open Google TV > Tap Library > Scroll to downloaded videos > Tap "Downloaded" > Tap "Remove."

YouTube Music downloads can be removed in a similar way: Open YouTube Music > Tap Library > Select "More" next to the song, album, or playlist > Tap "Remove download."

Media downloaded via other apps can be removed directly from within those apps.

Uninstall apps and clear app cache

Another method to free up storage on your Android phone is to remove apps you rarely use. Check all the apps installed on your phone and uninstall those you no longer need.

Many apps store temporary files over time. Clearing an app's cache can reclaim some storage space without deleting your actual data. You can do this via your phone's Settings app. Archive unused apps

You can free up space on your Android phone by using the 'Archive' feature for apps you don't use. This process removes the app from your phone while keeping your personal data safe and retaining the app icon on your device. You can reinstall the app from the Google Play Store later.

Open the Google Play Store
Tap on your profile photo
Go to Settings > General
Turn 'Automatically archive apps' on or off.
Delete downloaded files

Your 'Downloads' folder may contain documents, images, videos, PDFs, and other files that you no longer need. Check your downloaded files weekly or monthly and delete those that are no longer useful. You can use the 'Files' or 'Files by Google' app on your phone to view and delete these files
