Is Instagram listening to you? Use this trick to immediately stop creepy personal ads
Instagram Tips: Sometimes it feels like the ads on Instagram have become too personal. You talk about something, and shortly after, an ad related to it appears on your screen.
Instagram Tips: Sometimes it feels like the ads on Instagram have become too personal. You talk about something, and shortly after, an ad related to it appears on your screen. This has led to the belief that Instagram listens to users' conversations through their microphones. However, Instagram head Adam Mosseri has clarified that the company does not record users' conversations.
So how do these highly targeted ads appear?
In reality, Instagram closely monitors your in-app behavior. Data is analyzed on which posts you comment on, what you save, what you search for, and which profiles you interact with the most.
In addition, through Meta Pixel and cookies, Instagram also gathers information from your activity on third-party websites. Based on this information, you see hyper-personalized ads that make many people uncomfortable.
What to do if you don't like these ads?
If you also don't want Instagram to show overly personal ads based on your online habits, Meta has provided some controls for this.
Change ad settings from Meta Accounts Center
Meta has consolidated the ad settings for all its platforms in one place. Go to the Instagram app, open your profile, and tap on the three-line menu in the upper right corner. From there, go to Accounts Center. Scroll down to find the Ad preferences option. Inside, go to Manage info and select Activity information from ad partners. Now tap on Review settings and choose the option that you don't want ads to be made more relevant based on this information.
Disconnect activity outside of Meta
In the Accounts Center, go to the Your information and permissions section. Here you will find the Your activity of Meta technologies option. You can choose to disconnect a specific activity or completely disable all future tracking by entering your password. This will prevent Meta from using your information from external websites.
Important Note:
Changing these settings will not completely stop ads on Instagram. The only difference will be that you will see fewer ads based on your personal activity. Meta now displays ads not only based on Instagram activity but also on WhatsApp status and Meta AI chatbot interactions. Therefore, checking your privacy settings regularly has become more important than ever.
