Many people have experienced this situation multiple times: you're on an important call, but there's traffic noise outside, the TV is on in the background, or people are talking around you. The other person keeps asking you to repeat yourself, even if your network is fine. Many iPhone users don't know that Apple already has a built-in feature to address this problem. It's called Voice Isolation, and when you turn it on, your voice sounds much clearer on calls. Let's learn more about this feature.

What is Voice Isolation on iPhone?
Voice Isolation is a microphone mode that Apple introduced with iOS 16.4. This feature uses on-device processing to prioritize your voice and minimize background noise during calls.

Apple previously introduced similar mic modes for FaceTime, but now Voice Isolation works for regular phone calls as well. The best part is that it doesn't require any extra downloads and works silently in the background once enabled.

Voice Isolation is especially useful when you're making calls from noisy places, cafes, or offices, working from home with background noise, frequently using speakerphone, or simply want your voice to sound clearer without headphones. Instead of amplifying everything around you, the phone focuses on your voice and suppresses distracting sounds. This allows the person on the other end to hear you more clearly, even if your surroundings aren't quiet.

How to turn on Voice Isolation on iPhone?
This is where many users get confused, as this feature isn't available in the Settings app. You can only enable it during an active call. Here's how:

Make or receive a phone call.
During the call, swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center. Tap on the phone controls at the top.
Select Voice Isolation.
That's it. Once turned on, Voice Isolation remains enabled for incoming calls until you manually turn it off.

To disable it, follow the same steps and tap Standard.

What other microphone modes will you see?
Along with Voice Isolation, you'll also see:

Standard: The default microphone behavior, no filtering.
Wide Spectrum: Captures all surrounding sounds (especially useful for FaceTime group calls).
Automatic: The iPhone automatically chooses the best mode based on how you're using the phone.
Currently, Wide Spectrum only works with FaceTime, but its presence suggests that Apple may expand it to regular calls later.
