Internet Usage in India: According to Nokia's 2025 Mobile Broadband Index report, the average mobile user in India consumed over 31 GB of data per month during 2025.
Internet Usage in India: Nowadays, the internet has become essential for everything—from using phones and laptops to handling office work. With advancing technology, internet usage in India has moved far beyond just social media. Activities like video streaming, online gaming, AI-based apps, and high-speed 5G networks drive massive mobile data consumption. Recent reports indicate that Indians are now among the highest consumers of mobile data globally. Affordable data plans and budget-friendly smartphones have made the internet an integral part of everyday life for the common person. So, let’s look at exactly how much data we Indians consume in a single day.
Average monthly consumption of 31 to 36 GB of data
According to Nokia's 2025 Mobile Broadband Index report, the average mobile user in India consumed over 31 GB of data per month during 2025. Meanwhile, the Ericsson Mobility Report suggests this figure has reached approximately 36 GB per user per month. This consumption level is reported to be higher than that of developed regions like the US, Europe, and China. Breaking this down to a daily level, the average Indian uses just over 1 GB of data per day; however, given the rising usage of video streaming, gaming, and social media, many users consume significantly more than this.
Why is data usage growing so rapidly?
The report identifies the rising popularity of AI applications, 4K video streaming, cloud gaming, and social media content as key drivers of increased data consumption. With most people now watching videos, using short-video platforms, and streaming high-quality content on their smartphones, mobile data traffic is consistently setting new records. According to a Nokia report, India's total mobile data traffic exceeded 27 exabytes per month in 2025. Meanwhile, 5G data traffic surged by 70 percent year-on-year to reach 12.9 exabytes per month, accounting for approximately 47 percent of the total mobile broadband traffic.
5G Emerges as the Primary Driver of Data Consumption
The expansion of 5G networks in India has also rapidly boosted data usage. According to the report, 5G networks now account for 58 percent of the total mobile data traffic in metropolitan cities. The widespread availability and affordability of 5G smartphones across the country have further accelerated this adoption. By 2025, the number of active 4G devices had reached 892 million, with over 383 million of these being 5G-capable. Additionally, more than 90 percent of smartphones sold during the year came with 5G support.
