Instagram has taken a significant step toward making its platform safer for teenagers. The company is now implementing strict global rules regarding content deemed suitable only for users aged 13 and above. Previously—in October of last year—these rules were enforced solely in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. This move comes at a time when, just last month, U.S. courts held Meta responsible for causing harm to the mental health of young people.

**Putting a Curb on Certain Content**
The primary objective of this new Instagram rule is to completely shield teenagers from objectionable content. Following the implementation of these changes, posts involving violence, nudity, or drugs will be largely kept out of the reach of teenagers on the platform. Furthermore, in a move to further tighten its policies, Instagram has decided that its algorithms will neither proactively recommend nor easily display in users' feeds posts containing profanity, dangerous stunts, or references to drug use.

**The New 'Limited Content' Feature**
In addition to these measures, the company has introduced a new setting titled 'Limited Content.' This serves as a highly rigorous filter that not only prevents teenagers from viewing objectionable posts but also blocks them from posting comments on—or receiving comments on—such content.

In a blog post, Instagram stated: "Just as movies with a '13+' rating may occasionally contain some objectionable language or scenes, teenagers on Instagram may similarly encounter such content from time to time. However, we are making every effort to minimize such occurrences. We acknowledge that no system is entirely perfect, but we remain committed to refining and improving it over time."

**Controversy Over 'Movie Ratings' Analogy**
When Meta first introduced these rules last year, it described them as being inspired by the "PG-13 rating" system used for movies. However, the Motion Picture Association (MPA)—Hollywood's trade association—raised strong objections to this comparison and subsequently issued a legal notice to Meta. They argued that social media content cannot be compared to the rating systems used for films. Following this, Meta ceased using the term. The company acknowledged that films and social media are distinct entities, but maintained that this new feature represents Instagram's own unique approach—one that is analogous to film ratings.

Why is Meta facing scrutiny?
For a considerable time, Meta has faced serious allegations that the company prioritizes its business interests and profits over the mental well-being of children. In an effort to insulate itself from these controversies, the company recently introduced several safety features—such as sending direct alerts to parents when teenagers search for self-harm-related content, and introducing new "parental controls" for AI features.

However, recent court documents have revealed a shocking disclosure: Meta had been aware for years of the issue regarding obscene images being sent via Direct Messages, yet it significantly delayed the implementation of a safety feature designed to "blur" such images. Experts believe that, having already faced legal action in the United States, Meta's decision to now implement these restrictions globally is, in fact, a calculated strategy aimed at avoiding similar legal entanglements and regulatory scrutiny in other countries in the future.
