Social media giant Instagram is working on a feature that will give users more control. Meta recently confirmed that Instagram is developing a new option that will allow users to remove themselves from another person's "Close Friends" list. Currently, this feature is in its early stages and has not yet been released for public testing.

What is this new feature?
Since its launch in 2018, Instagram's "Close Friends" feature has allowed users to share their Stories, Reels, and posts with a select group, but it has long lacked a crucial element: the ability to remove yourself from someone else's list if they add you. However, according to a new prototype discovered by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, Instagram is now going to give users the option to voluntarily leave anyone's "Close Friends" list.

During this process, Instagram will also warn the user that after leaving the list, they will not be able to see that person's exclusive content until they are added back. Experts believe that while some people might be offended by being removed from a list, this will be a great relief for users who don't want to be part of someone's private list against their will and see unwanted content.

Competition and other changes
Interestingly, Instagram's competitor Snapchat, already allows its users to remove themselves from someone's private story, and now Instagram is also moving in the same direction. Along with this, Meta is also working on some new subscription services. According to Alessandro Paluzzi, Instagram is preparing to launch a "Premium Subscription" that could offer users several exclusive features. This would give users the freedom to create unlimited audience lists, see which followers are not following them back, and most notably, view other people's Stories without them knowing.

Future Plans
Meta says these changes are aimed at giving users more control over how and with whom they connect. The company plans to test different subscription bundles for its various apps (Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram) to offer optional "special features" while keeping the core experience free.
