Instagram: Will Your Instagram Chats No Longer Be Secure? Meta Takes a Major Decision Regarding Privacy Features..

The end-to-end encryption feature available in Instagram's Direct Messages (DMs) will be discontinued starting May 8, 2026. According to Meta, the decision to remove this feature was made because it was being utilized by very few users. It is worth noting that Meta first introduced end-to-end encryption on WhatsApp in 2016. The company subsequently implemented this feature across all its social media platforms, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger.

What is End-to-End Encryption?
End-to-end encryption means that no one—other than the sender and the recipient—can read a message. This technology makes messaging more secure. However, unlike on WhatsApp, this feature was not enabled by default on Instagram. On WhatsApp, every message is automatically encrypted, whereas on Instagram, this feature was available only in select countries, and users had to manually enable it for each chat. This is the reason why very few people were utilizing it.

A Meta spokesperson stated that if a user wishes to engage in messaging with end-to-end encryption, they can easily use WhatsApp, as this feature is already enabled by default across all chats on that platform.

The Introduction of Encryption
Meta first introduced end-to-end encryption on WhatsApp in 2016. Subsequently, in 2019, the company's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced that privacy would be prioritized across all of the company's messaging platforms in the future. At the time, he stated that securing private conversations through encryption was the right path forward.
