Instagram Instants: Instagram is creating a buzz in the social media world with a new experiment. The company is testing a new image-sharing app called “Instants,” where photos and videos automatically disappear after a certain period. This move by Meta is being viewed as a direct challenge to platforms like Snapchat and BeReal.

Testing Begins in Select Countries

Instagram has currently initiated testing of the Instants app in a few specific countries, including Italy and Spain. The app is being introduced as a separate (standalone) platform, and its listing has already been spotted on the Google Play Store. However, it is not yet available for download by the general public.

What Makes the Instants App Unique?

While Instagram’s existing platform is dominated by algorithms and heavily edited content, Instants has been designed with a completely different philosophy. Its primary focus is on the instant sharing of real-life, unedited photos. Photos or videos sent via this app can be viewed only once; they remain available for a maximum of 24 hours, after which they automatically disappear. Users can add lighthearted text captions to their posts, but features for filters or advanced editing are not provided.

No Camera Roll Access—Live Capture Only

Another distinctive feature of Instants is that it does not offer the option to upload photos from the phone’s gallery. Users can only capture and share photos or videos using the in-app camera. This ensures that the content remains highly authentic and truly real-time.

Who Can You Share With?

In this app, users can share their photos only with people who follow them and whom they follow back. In other words, content can only be shared with mutual followers or a designated “Close Friends” list. This list remains synchronized across both Instagram and Instants. Available as Both an App and a Feature

The company has clarified that Instants is currently being tested in some locations as a standalone app, while in other regions, it is being trialed as a feature integrated within Instagram. This move signals that Meta aims to provide users with an opportunity to connect in a more casual and low-pressure manner.

Why Meta Is Introducing This Change

For some time now, Instagram has been working towards encouraging users to share content that is more natural and unpretentious. Instants is an extension of this philosophy, offering people the chance to share unedited, in-the-moment glimpses with their friends.

The Instants app reinforces a growing trend in social media where the focus shifts away from “perfect” photos and towards authentic, spontaneously shared moments. It will be interesting to observe in the coming times just how popular this new feature becomes among users.
