Instagram May Limit Posts to 3 Hashtags, Ending 2011 Rule – Here’s How It Could Affect Users
California: Instagram is testing a major change that could reshape how users tag posts. Reports indicate that Meta, Instagram’s parent company, is experimenting with limiting each post to just three hashtags—a significant shift from the 30-hashtag limit that has been in place since 2011.
The Experiment
Some Reddit users have reported receiving an error message when trying to add more than three hashtags to a post. While this feature is not yet available to all users, it signals that Meta is testing hashtag control with select users before a possible wider rollout. Instagram has not issued an official statement about this experiment.
Hashtags have long been a key tool for content discovery on Instagram, allowing creators to expand their post reach. Over time, however, Instagram’s recommendation system has evolved. The Explore section now prioritizes content, captions, and user behavior over hashtags. Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, has repeatedly stated that hashtags are no longer as effective in boosting reach and now primarily serve as a way to categorize content.
Impact on Users
This change may particularly affect long-time users who relied heavily on hashtags to increase visibility. Newer, younger users tend to use fewer hashtags, relying more on content discovery via algorithmic recommendations. Still, users accustomed to the older method of filling posts with multiple tags may notice a difference in engagement.
What’s Next
This test indicates that Instagram is moving toward automated content discovery rather than user-based tagging. Whether the three-hashtag limit becomes permanent will depend on the outcome of ongoing testing and Meta’s broader platform strategy.
