Instagram Chats to Become Less Secure: Meta Removes Security Feature
A major change is on the horizon for Instagram users. Meta is soon set to discontinue a security feature currently available on the platform. Consequently, private chats on Instagram will no longer remain as fully secure as they were previously.
If you engage in private chats on Instagram and assume that your conversations are completely secure, you now need to exercise a bit more caution. This is because Meta has decided to disable a key privacy feature on Instagram. Following this change, private chats conducted on the platform will no longer be end-to-end encrypted as they were before. In other words, in the near future, messages sent on Instagram will not be considered as secure or private as they used to be.
This Feature Will Be Discontinued Starting May 8, 2026
Instagram’s parent company, Meta, has confirmed that the platform’s End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) messaging feature will be discontinued effective May 8, 2026. After this date, encrypted chats will no longer be supported on the platform.
What is End-to-End Encryption?
End-to-End Encryption is a security system designed to ensure that messages can be read only by the sender and the recipient. Even the company operating the platform cannot view these messages.
This Feature Was Introduced in 2023
According to reports, Instagram introduced encrypted messaging in December 2023. This initiative was part of Meta’s broader strategy to enhance privacy across its suite of applications. However, the company has now decided to remove this feature. According to Meta, the feature is being discontinued because a very small number of users were utilizing it.
What Changes for Users?
Once the feature is removed, messages sent on Instagram will no longer be end-to-end encrypted. This implies that, technically, Meta could access the content of messages—particularly for moderation or security-related purposes. Instagram has also stated that users who currently have encrypted chats will receive a notification within the app regarding this change. Users are advised to download their essential chats or media before May 8, 2026. However, if users have not updated Instagram for a long time, they may need to update the app before utilizing the download option.
Why Was This Decision Taken?
Meta has not explicitly disclosed the full reasons behind the removal of encrypted messaging; however, it is widely believed that online safety concerns and government pressure are major contributing factors. Governments in many countries around the world are concerned that encrypted platforms could serve as hiding places for child exploitation or illicit activities. If messages are not encrypted, tech companies would be able to scan for harmful content and take appropriate action against it.
How Will This Impact WhatsApp and Messenger?
Following this decision by Instagram, questions have arisen among users regarding whether this will also impact Meta’s other platforms, such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Currently, End-to-End Encryption is enabled by default on WhatsApp; therefore, no immediate changes have been announced for that platform.
