Indigenous AI 'BharatGen' developed: Will work in 22 languages, will compete with ChatGPT and Gemini, and will be launched this month..
The Indian government's flagship project, BharatGen, is now in its final stages. Union Minister Jitendra Singh informed the Rajya Sabha that the AI system will be able to write in all 22 of India's official languages by the end of this month. Importantly, the ability to write, speak, and recognize images has already been developed for 15 of these languages. BharatGen was launched in October 2024. It is a major government project aimed at developing a sovereign AI model for India.
BharatGen will be ready to write in all 22 of India's official languages by the end of this month. Work has already been completed on 15 languages, including features for writing, speaking, and photo/video recognition. Local dialects will also be included in the future to further improve the system over time.
What is BharatGen AI?
BharatGen is a completely indigenously developed multimodal generative artificial intelligence (AI) system. Its primary objective is to promote Indian languages in the digital world. The system will primarily perform three functions: speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and Patram, India's first document-vision model. Together, these models create a complete AI system that works with text, voice, and documents.
BharatGen has been developed collaboratively by several leading institutions, including IIT Bombay (leading the project), IIT Madras, Kanpur, Hyderabad, and Indore. This AI model has been trained on a text model with approximately 300 crore parameters.
BharatGen is also receiving support from IBM, Zoho, NASSCOM, the Ministry of Jal Shakti (Water Resources), and several state governments. Recently, under the India AI Mission, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology provided an additional ₹1,058 crore in funding for this project.
Why is BharatGen important for the common man?
BharatGen can help citizens in many ways, for which it offers various use-based features. For example, through 'Krishi Saathi', farmers can get agricultural advice by speaking in their local language, while 'e-VikrayAI' helps small shopkeepers create compelling descriptions of their products. Similarly, platforms like 'DocBod' simplify complex legal or government documents, making them understandable to the common man. These examples demonstrate that the use of AI will not be limited to large cities, but will make public services accessible to even the remotest villages.
Information provided in Parliament
Responding to a question from BJP leader Bhubaneswar Kalita, Minister Jitendra Singh stated that the Government of India is developing an AI system that will be completely indigenous, or 'Made in India'. This system will not only protect your data but will also reflect Indian culture and customs.
Preparation completed in 15 languages
Jitendra Singh said, "We have completed the work for 15 languages. By the end of this month, the writing facility will be available in all 22 official languages. Additionally, speech and vision modules will also be available in 15 languages." It is worth noting that BharatGPT will directly compete with AI platforms like ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
The government believes that BharatGPT will greatly assist in education, governance, digital services, and connecting ordinary citizens with technology in their own languages. This project is considered a significant step towards making India a strong and self-reliant player in the global AI sector.
