Sarvam AI: Until now, the world of artificial intelligence has been considered dominated by the US and China. India was often seen merely as a talent pool, not a center for core AI development. But the Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam AI is rapidly changing this perception. With its sovereign AI models developed entirely in India, the company is now directly challenging global tech giants.
Sarvam Vision Leaves Major AI Models Behind
Two of Sarvam AI's tools are currently generating significant buzz: Sarvam Vision and Bulbul. Sarvam Vision is an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) based AI model that has surpassed major names like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Anthropic Claude on certain benchmarks. Its accuracy is reportedly so impressive that users and AI experts are openly praising it.
Benchmark Scores Spark Global Interest
Sarvam AI co-founder Pratyush Kumar shared details of these achievements through posts on X (formerly Twitter). According to the company, Sarvam Vision achieved an accuracy of 84.3 percent on olmOCR-Bench, which is higher than models like Gemini 3 Pro and DeepSeek OCR v2. ChatGPT's score was significantly lower.
Furthermore, Sarvam Vision also achieved an impressive score of 93.28 percent on OmniDocBench v1.5. Notably, its performance was exceptionally strong even in challenging areas such as complex layouts, technical tables, and mathematical formulas, where traditional OCR systems often fail.
From Criticism to Praise
Sarvam AI was initially viewed with skepticism for its focus solely on Indic language models. But now, that skepticism is turning into admiration. Tech commentator Deedy Das also acknowledged that he had underestimated Sarvam. According to them, Sarvam's OCR and speech models are incredibly robust for Indian languages and fill a void that major global AI labs have overlooked. User feedback echoes this sentiment, with many expressing both surprise and enthusiasm after using Sarvam's tools.
Bulbul V3
Along with OCR, Sarvam AI has also launched its new text-to-speech model, Bulbul V3. This AI voice tool focuses on generating natural and expressive voices in Indian languages. Its concept is similar to international AI voice platforms like ElevenLabs, but it's specifically designed to meet India-centric needs. Currently, Bulbul V3 offers over 35 voices in 11 Indian languages, and the company plans to expand this to 22 languages soon.
