MapMyIndia, Google Maps' Indian rival, has expanded the capabilities of its domestic digital mapping and navigation app, Mappls, by adding multimodal public transport routes. According to the company's announcement on Tuesday, users will now be able to access details of metro, rail, and bus routes directly within the app. This addition is expected to further strengthen Mappls' position as a comprehensive and multimodal mobility platform. MapMyIndia stated that this new capability will bring together private and public transport experiences on a single app.

Multimodal Public Transport Routes Arrive on Mappls
With the addition of this new feature, commuters can now view public transport routes, stations, stops, and interchange options. The company said in a press note that this will help them plan more efficient and sustainable journeys.

The multimodal public transport route feature is available for select cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Indore, Patna, Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Jaipur, Kochi, and Bhopal.

According to the company, this feature is currently live on the iOS and web versions of Mappls. An Android rollout of the multimodal public transport routes is also planned soon. Mappls stated that its user base has crossed the 40 million mark, and the expanded public transport support aims to improve daily navigation for urban commuters.

The public transport routes added to Mappls build upon the company's existing features, such as turn-by-turn navigation, real-time traffic information, safety alerts, and smart routing. The company says that easy access to public transport information will encourage people to use public transport, like buses or metros, more often. This will reduce congestion on the roads, decrease pollution, and improve overall mobility in cities.

In the past few months, MapMyIndia has expressed its intention to partner with Perplexity AI. The company has also repeatedly highlighted its extensive experience in creating accurate maps of cities and villages since 1995. After launching this new feature, the company says it will continue to work with transport authorities and other partners to further improve public transport facilities in cities.
