India Revamps Passport Services: MEA Launches New PSP V2.0, GPSP V2.0 and High-Security E-Passports
India’s passport ecosystem has undergone a major digital upgrade. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has rolled out the next-generation Passport Seva Programme—PSP V2.0 and Global Passport Seva Programme (GPSP V2.0)—along with a highly secure e-Passport equipped with an RFID chip. These enhancements aim to make the passport application and issuance process faster, safer, and more user-friendly for Indian citizens both in India and abroad.
PSP V2.0 Goes Live Across All Passport Offices
The MEA has implemented PSP V2.0 simultaneously across the country. The upgraded platform is now operational in:
-
37 Regional Passport Offices
-
93 Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs)
-
450 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs)
The nationwide rollout began on 26 May 2025, ensuring that every citizen receives a unified and seamless experience. Following this, GPSP V2.0 was activated on 28 October 2025 at Indian embassies and consulates worldwide, standardizing passport services for the global Indian community.
This new system connects all passport-related stakeholders—citizens, officials, embassies, police verification units, and service centers—into a single integrated digital ecosystem.
What’s New in PSP V2.0?
PSP V2.0 introduces several advanced features designed to simplify every step of the passport process:
1. AI-Powered Chatbot and Voice Bot
Applicants now receive instant guidance while filling out forms or uploading documents. The AI assistant helps reduce errors and speeds up completion.
2. Upgraded Website and Mobile App
The new interface is cleaner, more intuitive, and significantly faster. Users get access to:
-
Auto-filled forms
-
Easy and secure document uploads
-
UPI and QR-based online payments
-
Real-time application tracking
3. Enhanced Transparency
The application process has become more transparent, allowing applicants to clearly see updates at every stage—from submission to police verification to dispatch.
4. Complete Digital Integration
The upgraded system ensures faster internal processing, reducing delays and improving coordination across passport centers and passport authorities.
Introducing the New e-Passport
One of the biggest upgrades under the new programme is India’s transition to e-Passports—a highly secure next-generation passport designed to enhance travel safety and speed.
Key Features of the e-Passport:
RFID Chip & Antenna
Each e-Passport contains an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna. The chip securely stores the passport holder’s personal data, which matches the information printed on the data page.
ICAO-Compliant Security Standards
The e-Passport meets the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), making it globally acceptable and improving the efficiency of immigration checks at airports.
Faster and More Secure Verification
Since the chip stores encrypted data, identity verification becomes quicker and more accurate. This reduces the chances of passport forgery and identity fraud.
Validity of Old Passports
The MEA has confirmed that all newly issued passports will now be e-Passports. However, existing traditional passports will remain valid until their expiry date. Citizens do not need to replace them immediately unless applying for a fresh passport.
A major step toward modern, secure, and seamless travel
With the launch of PSP V2.0, GPSP V2.0, and the RFID-enabled e-Passport, India has taken a significant leap toward fully digital, globally compliant passport services. The upgraded platforms aim to reduce paperwork, shorten processing timelines, and provide citizens with a smoother and more secure passport experience—whether they are applying from a district center in India or a consulate overseas.
