On May 7, Samsung announced a breakthrough in the field of predicting fainting episodes. In a joint clinical study conducted in collaboration with Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital, Samsung demonstrated that the Galaxy Watch 6 can predict Vasovagal syncope (VVS) with a high degree of accuracy. This discovery could potentially pave the way for real-time warning systems that alert users before they lose consciousness.

What is Vasovagal Syncope?
This is a condition in which heart rate and blood pressure suddenly drop significantly—often triggered by extreme stress—resulting in the individual fainting for a brief period. Although not life-threatening, a sudden fall to the ground can lead to injuries, such as bone fractures or severe head trauma. Therefore, early detection of this condition is considered crucial for mitigating such risks.

Professor Junhwan Cho of the Department of Cardiology at Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital noted that approximately 40 percent of people may experience Vasovagal syncope. In such instances, receiving a prior warning would allow them to move to a safe location or call someone for assistance.

According to the company, a joint research team led by Professor Cho evaluated 132 patients suspected of having VVS symptoms during induced fainting tests. Utilizing the photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors embedded in the Galaxy Watch 6, researchers analyzed Heart Rate Variability (HRV) data through an artificial intelligence algorithm. The results revealed that this watch model was capable of predicting an episode up to five minutes in advance with an accuracy of 84.6 percent.
