Vodafone Idea (Vi) on Wednesday launched an AI-powered initiative called Vi Protect, aimed at improving security against spam and cyber threats. The announcement was made at the India Mobile Congress 2025 (IMC 2025). The initiative includes two major systems: an AI-based voice spam detection system and an AI-driven cyber defense and incident response system. While the spam detection system identifies and flags fraudulent calls in real time, the network defense system helps protect Vi's network and enterprise operations from cyber attacks.

The Vi Protect program is designed for consumer, network, and enterprise users to protect them from spam, scams, and cyber attacks under a single platform. As part of this initiative, Vi has launched two systems: a voice spam detection system and an AI-driven network defense and incident response system.

How does Vi's Voice Spam Detection System work?

Vi's Voice Spam Detection System claims to identify spam and fraudulent calls in real time using AI models, web crawlers, and customer feedback. When a suspicious number calls a Vi user, a 'Suspected Spam' alert appears on the call screen, allowing users to decide whether to answer the call. Unlike third-party caller ID apps, this feature is integrated directly into Vi's network.

The Vi Protect program includes a voice spam detection system that identifies and flags fraudulent text messages. It also has an international calling display feature, which helps users easily identify genuine international calls. Additionally, the AI-powered threat analysis system is integrated with Vi's DNS, SMS, and Voice Gateways, analyzing threat patterns.

Vi Cyber Defense and Incident Response System

Under the Vi Protect initiative, Vi has introduced an AI-powered cyber defense and incident response system to protect its core network and enterprise operations. This system uses agentic and generative AI models, which are claimed to detect, analyze, and neutralize cyber threats within an hour. Vi says the system is designed to minimize false positives.

This multi-layered defense mechanism operates on a five-step process: anomaly detection, contextualization and categorization, interface engine agents, suggestive intelligence, and human validation. Vi has also confirmed that this advanced protection will soon be rolled out to its enterprise clients.

Vi claims that its security systems have flagged over 600 million spam and scam calls and messages to date. The company will also soon introduce a real-time URL protection feature, which will scan and block suspicious links to prevent phishing attacks and malware infections.
