How small can a QR code be? Find out the limits.

You have likely scanned QR codes thousands of times, but have you ever wondered just how small they can get? It is generally believed that if a QR code is made smaller than a certain size, a phone won't be able to scan it.

Today, QR codes have become an integral part of our lives. Whether you want to open a website or quickly access information, scanning a QR code with your phone is a very convenient method. However, a QR code is only effective if it is clear and sized correctly enough for a phone to scan it easily. It is commonly thought that a QR code should not be smaller than 2 to 2.5 centimeters. While some sources cite 1 centimeter as the minimum limit, in reality, a QR code can be much smaller than that. Let’s explore just how small a QR code can be.

How small can a QR code be?

Denso Wave, the company that created the QR code, originally developed it to easily label auto parts in its factories. The company defines the size of a QR code not based on the entire code, but on its smaller components—known as "modules." According to Denso Wave, the minimum size for a single module is 0.17mm. A standard, simple QR code consists of a 21x21 grid of modules. Based on this, with high-quality printing and a proper QR scanner, the code's size can be as small as approximately 3.57mm (or 0.14 inches).

It can be even smaller with a Micro QR Code.

In addition to standard QR codes, there are also Micro QR codes. Denso Wave introduced these in 2004. They range in size from 11 to 17 modules per side. In tests, a Micro QR code was successfully scanned even when it was only 2mm wide, while another Micro QR code containing more data worked at a size of 3mm. Technically, using phones and printers, it is possible to create and scan extremely small QR codes.

What is the world's smallest QR code?

According to Guinness World Records, the world's smallest QR code measures just 1.977 square micrometers. This QR code is so tiny that it cannot be seen with the naked eye; reading it requires specialized technology, such as calibrated scanning electron microscopy. Therefore, even though it holds the record for the world's smallest QR code, it is neither easy nor practical for the general public to use.
