You can use your phone as a router to connect Wi-Fi-enabled devices—such as laptops, tablets, or gaming consoles—to the internet via 4G or 5G networks. But the question remains: are mobile hotspots as risky as public Wi-Fi? According to media reports, while mobile hotspots are generally safe, certain precautions are essential.

Why are mobile hotspots better than public Wi-Fi?

When using public Wi-Fi at airports, hotels, or cafes, users lack full control over the network. Other people may also be connected to the same network, increasing security and privacy risks. In contrast, with a mobile hotspot, the user decides exactly which devices can connect to the network. However, this doesn't mean hotspots are entirely hack-proof; a weak password or incorrect settings could allow an unauthorized person to connect to your network.
