Heatwave Alert: The intensity of the heat is now on the rise. In several parts of the country, maximum temperatures have already crossed the 46°C mark—and it is only April. Under these conditions, staying comfortable becomes a challenge not just outdoors, but even inside the home. However, by adopting a few simple tips, you can effectively keep your home cool. Given the risks associated with heatwaves, the World Health Organization (WHO) has shared several such smart tips. Let's take a look at them:

How to Keep Your Home Cool Without an AC?
Tip #1: Prevent Daytime Heat from Entering Your Home
The simplest way to beat the heat is to block direct sunlight from entering your home. To achieve this, close all windows and doors as soon as morning breaks. Additionally, make use of curtains, blinds, or shutters. This prevents hot outside air from entering, thereby keeping the indoor temperature lower.

Tip #2: Use Fans Correctly
Fans are the most common method for seeking relief from the heat and are found in nearly every household. However, using them correctly is crucial. According to the WHO, when the temperature rises above 40°C, a fan merely circulates hot air. This means that at temperatures exceeding 40°C, electric fans may actually overheat the body rather than providing relief, thereby increasing the risk of heatstroke. To avoid this, place a bucket filled with cold water in the room. Doing so helps maintain humidity levels and prevents the air in the room from becoming excessively hot.

Tip #3: Minimize Heat-Generating Sources Inside the Home
During the day, limit the use of electronic appliances as much as possible. Lights, televisions, computers, and kitchen appliances all generate heat. Keeping these devices switched off can help prevent the indoor temperature from rising.

Tip #4: Take Advantage of Cool Night Air
As soon as the sun sets and the outside temperature begins to drop, open your windows. This allows cool air to flow into the house, flushing out the heat that has accumulated throughout the day.

Number 5 – White Paint/Whitewash
You can apply white paint or whitewash to the roof of your home. This prevents the roof from overheating; additionally, you can also grow plants on the rooftop. This further shields the roof from direct sunlight and helps maintain a cool temperature inside the house.

By keeping these small details in mind, you can keep your home cool even during scorching summer heat.
