Grok: Want to prevent Grok AI from using your data and photos? Learn about all the settings..
Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok is once again in the spotlight. This time, the AI tool is embroiled in controversy for generating objectionable images of users. Recently, Grok AI created deepfake images of thousands of women publicly available on X (formerly Twitter), raising serious questions about user privacy. The matter escalated to the point where the Indian government issued an ultimatum to X, demanding the removal of all objectionable content within 72 hours. If you don't want Grok to generate content based on your social media activity, the company provides users with some controls. If you use Grok or X, this information is crucial for you.
By default, Grok can use data associated with your X (formerly Twitter) profile. This includes profile details, account settings, your preferences, location, and publicly visible posts. The goal is to make the responses more personalized, but if users don't want their privacy violated, they can adjust some settings.
Where to find data controls in Grok?
First, open Grok in your browser. Then click on your profile picture or icon. From there, go to Settings and then open the Data Controls section. This section contains all the options related to data usage, storage, and personalization.
How to turn off X-based personalization?
If you don't want Grok to personalize responses based on your X profile, follow these steps:
Open Settings in Grok
Click on Data Controls on the left
Find the "Personalize Grok using X" option
Turn this toggle off
After this, Grok will not use your X profile, account information, location, settings, preferences, or public posts.
Also, check other personalization settings.
In the same section, you might also find the "Personalize Grok with your conversation history" option. This feature tailors responses based on your previous chats. If you want more control, you can turn this off as well. However, private chats are not saved, and any conversation can be manually deleted. What happens after turning off the setting?
Grok will continue to function normally even after you turn off X-based personalization. The only difference will be that the responses will be based less on your social media activity and more on general prompts. You can always go to the Data Controls section to turn this setting back on or explore other options, such as chat sharing, data export, storage, and clearing the cache.
In short, turning off personalization gives you more control over your data, while Grok's essential features remain available as before.
