Grok Controversy: Why is Grok repeatedly getting embroiled in controversies? Learn how this AI tool is different from ChatGPT and Gemini..
With the start of the new year, a trend went viral on X (formerly Twitter). Many users misused Grok AI's image editing feature, giving the AI commands to undress or depict women, Bollywood actresses, and public figures in bikinis. Surprisingly, Grok followed these instructions, generating thousands of obscene and offensive images. This AI tool not only created millions of fake (deepfake) images, but these images are also appearing in X's public media tab, severely harming the dignity of the women who are the victims.
Indian Government Issues 72-Hour Ultimatum
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a very strict notice to X. The government has given X 72 hours to remove all offensive content from the platform. The government has clearly stated that if X does not curb these obscene images and the accounts that created them, it will lose its safe harbor protection. This means that X will then be held directly responsible for any illegal content posted by users and could face criminal charges. The notice refers to the IT Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
Elon Musk Also Warns Users
Initially, Elon Musk seemed to be making light of these images and even created a similar image of himself. However, after X received the notice from the Indian government, he became more serious and stated that the same laws apply to illegal activity on X as apply to uploading illegal content. However, this trend is still viral on X, and users are still creating these images without restraint. It's worth noting that it is almost impossible to generate such images by giving direct commands to AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini. So how is Grok creating these images? Grok has been involved in controversies before.
Compared to ChatGPT and Google Gemini, Grok has been involved in several controversies regarding its responses. Last year, Grok made offensive remarks about several political figures. Grok even called US President Donald Trump a pedophile and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a war criminal. It also used abusive language with several users. In controversial statements, Grok has also accused Israel and the US of committing genocide in Gaza.
Grok is quite different from Gemini and ChatGPT.
Musk says that Grok is like a pen. The pen doesn't decide what to write; it only does what it's told. Therefore, it shouldn't be blamed. Now the question is, why don't Google's Gemini or OpenAI's ChatGPT do what Grok does? There are three main reasons behind this, which reflect its design, working style, and Elon Musk's idea of 'free speech'. Google and Microsoft adopt a safety-first policy with their AI tools. Their AIs have very strict filters that immediately block any sexual or offensive prompts. In contrast, Elon Musk has tried to make Grok outspoken, which is why its safety rules are quite flexible.
Musk has presented Grok as an 'anti-woke' AI, meaning it doesn't adhere to the political or social constraints that companies like Google or Microsoft consider necessary. Grok's guardrails have been deliberately kept very loose so that it can respond to all kinds of prompts from users. This is why it often generates images that other AI models would immediately block. Technically, Grok uses an image generation model called Flux, which is known for its photo-realistic quality. Its technology is so precise that it becomes difficult to distinguish between a fake image created by AI and a real photograph.
If we talk about Google's Gemini or OpenAI's ChatGPT, their working methodology is opposite to Grok's. Both these companies operate on the principle of Constitutional AI. This means that before the AI can provide any answer, it has to go through thousands of safety rules and ethical standards. If a user asks it to create an obscene image of a public figure or content related to violence, these models flatly refuse.
Grok is integrated with X (formerly Twitter). If you use X, you can get information from Grok by simply typing @Grok followed by your question in any post or comment. This information often appears in X's public feed, allowing harmful content to go viral quickly. People are using this pattern to create images. However, Gemini and ChatGPT are limited to their respective platforms. All your chats with them remain confined to your private chat box. Another major reason for Grok's uninhibited nature is Musk's support for "free speech." Musk has been against imposing too many restrictions on AI.
Is the regulation of AI necessary?
Experts say that people should have freedom of expression on social media platforms, but not under the guise of it...
