Government's new system: From November 1, the name of an unknown caller will appear on the phone..
If you still use Truecaller to identify unknown numbers, there is good news for you. The Government of India is set to mandate an official caller ID system—known as CNAP (Calling Name Presentation)—across the country. Recent reports indicate that, starting November 1, 2026, telecom companies will be required to provide this feature by default on smartphones with 4G and 5G connectivity. With this system in place, users will be able to see the registered name of the caller, even when receiving calls from unknown numbers.
Caller’s Name to Appear Alongside the Number
Under this new CNAP service, whenever you receive a call from a number not saved in your contacts, the caller’s name will appear on the screen alongside their mobile number. This name will be displayed based on the details recorded by the telecom operator—specifically, the information provided by the customer in their identity documents at the time of obtaining their SIM card.
The primary objective of this system is to simplify the identification of callers and protect users from issues related to unknown or unwanted calls. Notably, this feature will differ from services like Truecaller, as it will not require reliance on any third-party application to display the caller's name.
Alerts for Specific Calls
Reports also suggest that calls originating from outside India will be labeled as "International Call" on the screen, further assisting users in identifying calls from foreign numbers. However, telecom companies will not be permitted to retain the caller's name after the call has ended; the information will be handled through a "query-and-response" process.
