Google is introducing new tools for website owners, giving them greater control over how their sites appear on search engines. On Wednesday, the Mountain View-based tech giant announced the testing of new controls that allow publishers to decide whether their websites should appear in Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode in Search, and AI Overviews in Discovery, based on user preferences. This new toggle will appear alongside other website tools in Search Console. Additionally, the company has begun rolling out new insights for website operators, which will also be visible within Search Console.

New Controls and Insights Coming Soon to Google Search Console
In a blog post on Wednesday, the US-based tech giant announced a new tool allowing website owners to decide—based on their preferences and user behavior—whether they want their sites to appear in Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode in Search, and AI Overviews in Discovery.

With this new tool, publishers can prevent their website links and content from appearing in the AI-powered summaries found within Google’s search interface. The company stated that the toggle button for this feature will be available in Search Console.

Google also confirmed that websites opting out of AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search will not receive traffic or impressions from these 'generative AI search features.' Furthermore, the tech giant stated that this control would not be used as a ranking signal for standard search results outside of AI Overviews; therefore, it will not affect how websites appear in regular search results. Additionally, the Mountain View-based company has announced the rollout of new insights for website publishers in Search Console; these will highlight details regarding the appearance of their webpages in generative AI search tools, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search.

Alongside impression metrics, the search giant will now provide information on which webpages are being showcased as part of AI-generated responses and the countries where this is occurring. The company plans to introduce further metrics over time.

The company stated that these new control and insight tools are currently being rolled out to a subset of website owners in the UK, with plans to make them available globally in the future.
