Google Storage Policy: Google has implemented a major change to its free cloud storage policy for new users. Now, creating a new Google account will provide only 5GB of free storage by default, whereas previously, 15GB was offered. In fact, for quite some time, Google has been providing its users with 15GB of free cloud storage—a feature that distinguished it from companies like Apple—but it now appears that this benefit may gradually be undergoing a change. According to recent reports and screenshots surfacing on Reddit, Google is working on a new policy under which new users are initially being allotted only 5GB of free storage.

According to reports, when users were creating new Gmail accounts, they were presented with a choice: either keep the account with 5GB of storage, or add and verify a mobile number to unlock the full 15GB of storage at no additional cost. Google is now modifying the rules regarding how it allocates cloud storage to its users. Previously, every Google account came with 15GB of free storage. Now, new accounts are initially being provided with only 5GB of storage.

How to Get 15GB of Free Storage
If you add your phone number, you can obtain the full 15GB of storage at no extra cost.
This storage will be utilized across Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail.
Why is Google doing this?
Google states that it aims to implement a "one person, one storage allocation" rule. By requiring the addition of a phone number, the company intends to ensure that a single individual does not repeatedly obtain free storage, thereby helping to reduce the prevalence of fake accounts and spam. This measure has been adopted to address rising storage costs and to curb the creation of fraudulent accounts. If you already possess a Google account that currently includes 15GB of storage, you will not observe any changes for the time being; however, if you are in the process of creating a new account, you may be required to link your mobile number to access the full 15GB of storage.
