Google Photos Storage Saver: Convert Original Quality Images to High Quality and Free Up Space Easily

 |

With Google’s updated storage policy now in effect, managing space in your Google account has become more important than ever. Earlier, Google Photos offered unlimited free storage for images uploaded in “High Quality,” while “Original Quality” photos were counted against the free 15GB storage limit provided with every Google account. This free quota is shared across Google Photos, Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Docs.

However, from June 1 onward, Google changed this policy. Any new photos or videos uploaded—whether in High Quality or Original Quality—are now counted toward the same 15GB storage limit. The only exception is content that was already backed up before this policy change, which remains unaffected.

Because of this update, many users are now looking for effective ways to free up storage space without deleting their precious memories. Thankfully, Google Photos offers a simple built-in option that allows users to convert already backed-up Original Quality photos and videos into High Quality. This compression process significantly reduces file size while keeping visual quality suitable for everyday viewing.

What Is the Difference Between Original Quality and High Quality?

Original Quality photos are stored in the exact resolution and file size as captured by your device. These files consume more storage and quickly fill up your Google account quota. High Quality photos, on the other hand, are intelligently compressed by Google. While the file size is reduced, the image quality remains visually pleasing for most users and devices.

If you have been uploading photos in Original Quality for years, converting them to High Quality can help you recover a large portion of your used storage.

How to Convert Original Quality Photos to High Quality

Follow these simple steps to compress your existing photos and videos:

  1. Open a web browser on your computer and go to photos.google.com/settings.

  2. Look for the option labeled Recover Storage.

  3. Click on it to view a pop-up showing how much storage space you can reclaim by compressing your photos and videos.

  4. Select Compress to begin the conversion process.

Once completed, Google Photos will automatically compress eligible Original Quality content into High Quality, freeing up space in your account.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

  • This option is visible only if your account contains Original Quality uploads.

  • Users who have always used High Quality uploads may not see the “Recover Storage” option.

  • The process is irreversible, meaning compressed photos cannot be restored to their original resolution.

By using this feature wisely, users can continue backing up memories without immediately upgrading to paid storage plans.
