Google Pay: Children Can Now Make UPI Payments Even Without a Bank Account—Google Pay Introduces the Amazing Feature..
Nowadays, even children want to make online payments for small purchases, but this becomes difficult due to their lack of a bank account. To address this issue, Google Pay (GPay) has introduced a fantastic feature called 'Pocket Money.' This feature operates on the 'UPI Circle' system. With its help, parents can enable their children or family members to make UPI payments without needing their own bank accounts. The best part is that full control over the funds remains in the hands of the primary user (i.e., the parents). Let's explore what this feature is and how it works.
**What is Google Pay 'Pocket Money'?**
Google Pay's 'Pocket Money' feature essentially operates on the principle of a 'UPI Circle,' making digital payments even easier for families. It primarily involves two types of users: first, the 'Primary User'—such as parents—whose bank account is linked to Google Pay; and second, the 'Secondary User'—such as children, other household members, or domestic staff—who are granted the facility to make payments. The most significant highlight of this feature is that the secondary user is not required to possess their own bank account. They can easily make payments using the Google Pay app on their smartphone, while the funds are deducted directly from the primary user's linked bank account.
**How Do Limits Work?**
With security and control in mind, Google Pay offers the primary user two excellent options:
**Option 1:** If you wish to allow your child to spend independently within a predetermined limit, you can set a monthly spending cap of up to ₹15,000. Within this limit, the child can make direct payments without needing to seek your permission.
**Option 2:** If you prefer to maintain complete oversight of expenses, choose this option. Under this setting, whenever the child attempts to make a payment, you will receive a request. The payment will be successfully processed only after you 'Approve' it from your own phone.
**Important Points Regarding This Feature**
Before you begin using this feature, it is essential to understand certain technical and legal aspects associated with it. As a primary user, you can add a maximum of 5 secondary users to your UPI Circle. This is subject to the condition that each of them possesses their own smartphone with the Google Pay app registered to their respective mobile numbers. For the setup process, it is also mandatory that the secondary user's number is saved in your contact list and that they have their own UPI ID or UPI Circle QR code available. Furthermore, keeping security and banking regulations (KYC) in mind, you will be required to disclose your relationship with them; if necessary, you may also need to enter details of their government-issued ID to ensure the entire process remains transparent and secure.
How to Set Up 'Pocket Money' on Google Pay? (Step-by-Step Guide)
Enabling this feature is extremely simple. Just follow these steps:
Open the Google Pay app on your smartphone and navigate to your profile.
Tap on the 'UPI Circle' option located there.
Now, select the 'Pocket Money' option.
From your contact list, select the name or number of the person (secondary user) you wish to add.
Scan that contact's UPI Circle QR code.
Now, choose your preferred settings—either 'Approve every payment' or 'Set a monthly limit.'
Fill in the necessary details requested (such as your relationship with the user or their government ID number).
Select your bank account, enter your UPI PIN, and send them an invitation.
As soon as the other person accepts your invitation, they will be able to start making secure digital payments using your bank account.
