Google is preparing for AI integration in the Chrome browser, currently conducting testing.
Is a native AI mode coming to Google Chrome soon? New testing reveals it will offer features like file uploads, tab summaries, and image generation.
Google Chrome browser: According to reports, Google is testing a new version of its AI mode tool that runs directly within the Google Chrome browser. According to the report, this new experience eliminates the need for users to open a separate search page, making access to the tool even easier. This means users won't have to repeatedly open Google Search to ask questions, as the AI will be available directly in the browser. This new interface has reportedly been spotted in the latest build of Chrome Canary and opens via an internal address, suggesting that this feature is not operated through Google Search. Furthermore, this feature allows users to ask questions, upload files or photos, and receive answers all within the same window. It is currently in the testing phase and is not yet available to all users.
The way you search on Chrome will change
According to Windows reports, the updated AI mode will be accessed within Google Chrome as Contextual Tasks. Under this, users can ask questions and upload PDFs and photos. They can even summarize or analyze documents directly within the browser. Previously, when users searched for something using AI mode, it would redirect them to the Google search results page, but now this will be done directly within Chrome.
How it will work
For example, during testing, when an open tab was selected, and the AI mode was used to ask a question about it, the tool provided an accurate summary of the webpage without opening any other webpage. This means the tool can now access these tabs and help users answer questions related to them. This is similar to the capabilities of Perplexity's Comet browser and OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas. Chrome supports image generation internally.
The report further states that the native AI mode also supports image generation using Google's Nano Banana or Nano Banana Pro tools. According to the report, users with an active AI subscription, such as Google AI Pro or Ultra, will receive better output quality. Image creation happens directly within Chrome, without requiring a search or opening an external editor.
The report also revealed that some parts of the interface appear incomplete, and some features are not working correctly. However, this is likely because many features are still under development.
