At the India AI Pre-Summit event, Google made several major announcements to strengthen online security in India. The company announced new anti-scam tools, security features, and expanded partnerships with various institutions.
New technology tools will help implement the DPDP Act.
A senior IT Ministry official stated that specific privacy technologies, such as federated learning, homomorphic encryption, and differential privacy, will now be used to implement the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. Vikas Chaurasia, a ministry official, said, "The data protection law has been enacted; now it remains to be implemented. For this, PETs (privacy-enhancing technologies) will be crucial. That's why we are expanding our partnerships with institutions like the Center for Responsible AI (CeRAI) at IIT Madras." This discussion was organized by Google India in Delhi on November 20th. This AI Pre-Summit Forum is part of preparations ahead of the larger India AI Impact Summit in February 2026.
Google's Multi-Layer AI Security Model
At the event, Google explained how it will use AI to protect Indian users from online fraud and digital scams. Several new features and security upgrades were announced.
1. New Scam Detection Feature for Pixel Phones
Google Pixel phones are now receiving a new scam detection feature. This feature, using Gemini Nano AI, will scan calls in real-time on the phone. If a call appears to be a scam, it will immediately alert. Importantly, no call recording or data will be sent to Google servers. The feature will be disabled by default and will only work for calls from unknown numbers. Call participants will hear a beep, and users can turn it off at any time.
2. New alert to prevent digital arrest scams
Google is also testing a new feature to prevent the rapidly increasing number of 'digital arrest scams' in India. On phones running Android 11 or above, if you share your screen and the contact is an unknown person, a large warning message will appear. It will include a one-tap option to immediately hang up or stop screen sharing. Google developed this feature in collaboration with fintech partners like Google Play, Navi, and Paytm.
3. ePNV to become a new secure number verification system
Google has also introduced a new Android security protocol, Enhanced Phone Number Verification (ePNV). It can replace SMS OTP and provide more secure and consent-based verification through SIM check.
Google's Other Security Achievements
Google Pay displays over 1 million fraud alerts every week. Google Play Protect has so far blocked more than 115 million suspicious app installs that could have caused fraud by granting incorrect permissions.
