Google Gemini's new rule: changes to model access for free and AI Plus users; 'Deep Think' coming to Pro..
Google is making significant changes to how it offers its Gemini AI models across various subscription plans. Starting October 9, free users of Gemini will only have access to the Flash-Lite model. Changes are also being made for AI Plus subscribers; they will no longer have access to the Pro model.
On the other hand, the AI Pro and AI Ultra plans will offer the full suite of Gemini models: Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. Additionally, Google is introducing the 'Deep Think' feature for AI Pro users. The company is also working on new 'Thinking Effort' options within the Gemini app.
Free users get only Flash-Lite
Google has detailed the new model limits in an updated support document. From October 9, users without a Google AI subscription will only have access to the Flash-Lite model in Gemini. The Flash and Pro models will be removed from the free tier.
Meanwhile, AI Plus users will retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash, but the Pro model will no longer be part of this plan. The AI Plus plan is priced at $4.99 (approximately ₹500) per month. Google has stated that affected users will be notified via email about when these changes will take effect on their accounts.
These changes come as Google shifts to counting Gemini usage based on request requirements. Complex queries, lengthy conversations, or the use of advanced models can consume a larger portion of a user's limit.
Deep Think coming to AI Pro
Google has also announced the introduction of the 'Deep Think' feature for AI Pro subscribers. Previously, this feature was exclusive to the AI Ultra plan. Deep Think will now be available in the AI Pro plan, which costs $19.99 (approximately ₹1,900) per month.
AI Ultra users will continue to have access to this feature through their existing $99.99 and $199.99 plans. Deep Think utilizes parallel reasoning to solve complex queries and requires the Pro model to function. 'Low', 'Medium', and 'High' Options May Come to Gemini
Google is testing three new 'Thinking Effort' options within the Gemini app: Low, Medium, and High. These settings will allow users to determine how much reasoning effort Gemini should apply when generating answers to queries.
Higher reasoning effort could also result in greater consumption of the usage allowance. Currently, Gemini features an 'Extended Thinking' capability for complex queries.
Work Underway on Gemini 4 Argon
Google is also preparing to advance Gemini 4 Argon. The company is testing the model with select trusted cybersecurity professionals through the 'Fairwind' program. Subsequently, it may be made available to paid API customers and AI Ultra subscribers.
However, Google has not yet clarified whether Argon will be included in the AI Pro plan or if a new tier—positioned above AI Ultra—will be introduced for it.
