The winter season is approaching, and with it, the use of water heaters—or geysers—begins in almost every household. While a hot water bath may feel comfortable, improper use or lack of maintenance can lead to serious accidents or exorbitant electricity bills. Let’s explore how to use and maintain your geyser during the winter months.

How does an electric geyser work?
It heats the water in a tank using an electrically powered heating element. A built-in thermostat regulates the temperature.
These units are highly safe, easy to install, and durable; however, they do consume a significant amount of electricity.

How does a gas geyser heat water?
It heats water instantly using an LPG or PNG gas burner. These units either have no tank or a very small one.

They are quite cost-effective to operate and do not rely on electricity. However, there is a risk of carbon monoxide gas leakage.

Precautions to take when using a geyser
Ensure proper ventilation: Never install a gas geyser inside a completely enclosed bathroom.

A bathroom must have a ventilator or an exhaust fan to allow potentially suffocating fumes to escape.

Turn it off in time: Switch off the electric geyser before you go to take a bath; this eliminates the risk of electric shocks.

Limit the temperature: Set the geyser’s temperature between 50°C and 60°C. Water that is too hot poses a risk of skin burns.

Proper maintenance is essential
Annual servicing: Have your geyser inspected by a professional technician at the start of the winter season.

Replace the anode rod: Hard water can cause mineral deposits (scale) to accumulate inside the geyser tank. Replace the magnesium anode rod every 1–2 years to prevent the tank from rusting.

Check for leaks and wiring issues: Have any cuts in the wires, faulty plugs, or water leaks from pipes repaired immediately.

With the right information and a little bit of caution, you can enjoy hot water safely and comfortably this winter, without any risks.
