In the national capital, Delhi, there is now hope for relief from serious issues such as bursting water pipelines, waterlogging on roads, and the wastage of drinking water. AI will now send immediate alerts in the event of a pipeline leak, and a 'water ambulance'—a rapid-response service—will be dispatched to provide assistance. The Delhi government has adopted AI technology to identify vulnerable water pipelines, predict potential bursts, and pinpoint areas experiencing low water pressure. On Wednesday, Water Minister Pravesh Verma inaugurated a state-of-the-art 'Intelligent Command and Control Center' at the JWIL Infra Limited office on Shivaji Marg.

This new digital center will consolidate live water supply data, consumer complaints, historical maintenance records, and the GPS locations of field repair teams onto a single, centralized dashboard. This will enable officials to instantly identify problem areas and monitor the progress of repair work in real time.

Leveraging Smart Meters and Digital-Twin Technology
This advanced system integrates data from smart meters, digital pipeline maps, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, and GPS-equipped field vehicles into a unified platform. It utilizes cutting-edge 'digital-twin' technology, which creates a virtual model of Delhi’s entire water network. This will assist in understanding water demand patterns and predicting potential pipeline failures before they occur.

Addressing the Major Challenge of Water Wastage
This initiative comes at a time when Delhi is grappling with significant water wastage. According to the 2026-27 budget projections, 45 percent of Delhi’s total water supply falls under the category of 'non-revenue water.' This includes not only leaks but also unauthorized usage, faulty meters, and billing errors. The government aims to reduce these losses to 15 percent. For this purpose, an allocation of ₹9,000 crore has been made for the Delhi Jal Board in the budget, along with ₹475 crore for the expansion of the Chandrawal Water Treatment Plant and its associated pipelines.

Direct benefit to 10 percent of the population
This new facility is linked to the Delhi Jal Board’s Chandrawal Water Supply Project, for which JWIL is executing three separate packages. According to officials, this project will cover approximately 10 percent of Delhi’s population and geographical area, including localities such as Shastri Nagar, Zakhira, Naraina, Shadipur, and certain VIP areas.

On this occasion, the Water Minister also flagged off a specialized emergency response vehicle. The vehicle is equipped with high-capacity submersible pumps, a 60 kVA generator, and all necessary modern repair tools. This will enable teams to promptly clear water accumulated due to pipeline leaks and carry out operations even in the absence of a power supply. During the inauguration, the Minister issued strict instructions, emphasizing that immediate action must be taken upon receiving any complaint and that every such action must be tracked.
