Over the past few years, India has developed several digital technologies that have simplified the lives of ordinary people. The need to carry cash for payments, keep essential documents handy, or stand in long queues at toll booths has significantly decreased. Let us look at five such Indian technologies that have granted people digital freedom.

1. UPI: Freedom from the hassle of carrying cash
Earlier, one had to carry cash even for the smallest purchases, and the worry about having exact change was an added burden. UPI revolutionized the way payments are made. Now, whether at a tea stall or a large mall, money can be transferred in seconds simply by scanning a QR code. This has made everyday shopping much easier for people.
2. FASTag: Freedom from long toll queues
Motorists used to have to wait in long lines at toll plazas to pay in cash, often facing issues with exact change. FASTag has significantly alleviated this problem. Vehicles can now pass through toll plazas without a cash transaction, as the toll amount is deducted digitally. This has helped save both time and fuel during journeys.

3. DigiLocker: Reduced need to carry physical documents
Safeguarding documents like driving licenses, Registration Certificates (RC), Aadhaar cards, or marksheets is not always easy. DigiLocker provides a facility to store these essential documents digitally. Now, digital documents can be presented via mobile phones whenever required. This has eliminated the hassle of losing paper documents or carrying files everywhere. It is accepted everywhere, from railway stations to airports.

4. ONDC: A new option for online shopping
ONDC—Open Network for Digital Commerce—has created a unique network for online shopping. Its objective is to connect small shopkeepers and local businesses with the digital commerce ecosystem. This enables businesses such as grocery stores and local restaurants to reach online customers. It offers small business owners an opportunity to establish a presence in the digital marketplace.

5. NavIC: India's own navigation system
NavIC is India's indigenous satellite navigation system designed for route finding and location tracking. It has been developed with a specific focus on the Indian region and its surrounding areas. It can be utilized for location- and navigation-related services. Support for NavIC is also increasingly being seen in Indian smartphones.
