Fraud: Woman loses Rs 87,000 while trying to return vegetables worth Rs 24; avoid making this mistake to get a refund..
These days, various types of cyber fraud cases are coming to light from across the country. Now, a new case has emerged from Ahmedabad. A woman fell victim to fraud while trying to get a refund for vegetables ordered from a quick commerce platform. Let's find out what the whole case is about.
What happened was that a woman ordered eggplants worth Rs. 24 from the quick commerce platform Zepto. She had ordered thin eggplants, but when the delivery boy arrived with the vegetables, she received large eggplants. When she tried to file a complaint for a refund, it proved costly for her.
The Customer Care Turned Out to Be Fraudulent
Instead of searching for the company's customer care number on the app, the woman searched for it on Google. She called the number she found there and provided all the requested information. But the woman didn't know she was talking to fraudsters. She was then asked to open a link sent to her phone. She was told that to get the refund, she had to open this link and submit her bank details. When she did this, a total of Rs. 87,000 was withdrawn from her bank account in two transactions.
When the woman realized she had been defrauded, she filed a complaint at the nearest police station. The local police are currently investigating the matter. Now, the important thing is what you should do to prevent such fraud from happening to you. First of all, you should know that no company's helpline or customer care will ever ask you for personal information such as your account number, OTP, password, or PIN. Remember that if someone is asking you for this information over the phone, it indicates malicious intent.
Some important precautions to avoid this type of fraud:
1. Do not search for numbers on Google: Never search for customer care numbers on Google. Instead, go to the official website or app of the bank, e-commerce, or quick commerce company and contact them using the number or email ID provided in the support section. 2. Returns and Refunds via the App: If you ordered an item through the app and wish to return it, the app provides options for initiating a return and receiving a refund. You don't need to contact any external numbers for this. Once the return is complete, the refund will be automatically credited to your bank account or e-wallet. You can check the status of the refund in the app.
3. What to do if you are a victim of fraud: If you fall victim to this type of cyber fraud, call your bank's helpline as soon as possible and have your account blocked. Also, file a transaction dispute. You can immediately call the 24x7 National Cyber Helpline at 1930 and register a complaint. The sooner you take these steps, the more likely you are to successfully stop the fraudulent transaction.
4. Inform the Cyber Police: You can also file an online complaint on the www.cybercrime.gov.in portal. It is also essential to file a written FIR at the cyber branch of your nearest police station.
