The company has launched a new sign-in and recovery option that verifies your identity via a selfie video. If the account cannot be recovered through other methods, users can regain access using their selfie video. Additionally, this can be used to access various other Google features and services. However, this feature has not yet been rolled out to all locations or devices.

Feature to serve as an additional account recovery option

Google has stated that this feature will function as an additional recovery option alongside passkeys and recovery contacts. You must be signed in to your Google account to set this up; if you aren't signed in, you won't be able to add a selfie video.

How to add a selfie video?

This feature has not been rolled out to all users yet, so you first need to check your eligibility. You can visit `g.co/signin-selfie` in your browser to see if this option has been rolled out for your device. If the feature is available, you will see an option to record a short video of your face.
To enroll in this feature, open the selfie video setup page and follow Google's instructions. Throughout the process, keep looking at the device's camera and move your head as instructed. The camera will capture your face from multiple angles during this time. Afterward, your selfie video will be securely saved to your Google account.

When will the recorded video be useful?

If, in the future, you are unable to access your Google account from your device or have forgotten your password, Google will offer the selfie verification option to help you recover your account. You will then be asked to record a fresh video. Google will compare this recording with the saved video and grant you access to the account once your identity is verified.

Privacy will also be prioritized.

Google has stated that the video will be stored only with the user's consent. It will remain fully encrypted while stored and can be deleted at any time. Google has also mentioned implementing several security checks to prevent spoofing.
