Following the deepfake controversy, X decides that only paid users will now be able to create photos using Grok AI: Report
X has restricted image generation and editing on Grok AI to paid users only, following widespread criticism over the creation of sexually explicit deepfake images. This information comes from reports. The move comes amid alleged pressure from authorities in the UK and growing demands for stricter regulatory action. Grok had allowed users to digitally manipulate images to remove clothing and depict mostly women in sexual poses. Following public outcry, Elon Musk's company has restricted these features to subscribers only.
Calls for X to be blocked in the UK over illegal AI images
The Guardian reports that most users can no longer generate or edit images using Grok on X. Paid subscribers, whose identities and payment details are held by the platform, will retain access. Non-paying users can still access image editing tools through Grok's separate app and website.
Meanwhile, the BBC reported that the decision followed warnings of fines, regulatory action, and potential bans on X in the UK. Government sources told the broadcaster that they expect Ofcom to use all available powers in response to concerns about illegal AI-generated images.
Under the Online Safety Act, Ofcom can reportedly seek court orders to restrict access to the platform or limit its ability to operate in the UK. The BBC said it had contacted the regulator for comment on the matter.
The report noted that Grok is generally free to use and can be tagged in posts or replies. However, users could also request image edits that digitally remove clothing. Some women affected by these edits told the BBC that they felt humiliated and dehumanized.
By Friday morning, the BBC observed that Grok was telling users attempting to edit images that the feature was now restricted to subscribers and prompting them to sign up. It appeared that only accounts with X's paid verification badge were able to successfully request image editing.
