Wingo App: After a major online fraud case came to light, the Ministry of Home Affairs completely banned the online gaming app Wingo in India. Investigations revealed that the app was secretly sending fake SMS messages from users' mobile phones. Surprisingly, the people whose phones were being used to send the messages were completely unaware of it. As soon as officials realized the large scale of this scam, they took immediate action and shut down the entire network associated with the app.
Users' phones became a tool for fraud without their permission
According to government officials, the Wingo app was using users' mobile devices without their permission. Fake messages were being sent from the phones with the aim of defrauding other people. In this entire scheme, ordinary users unknowingly became part of a cybercrime. The plan to send millions of messages was operating on such a large scale that the government had to intervene immediately.
Cyber Crime Center alerts Android users
The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Center (I4C) shared information about this case on the social media platform X. Android users were also clearly warned not to download or use the Wingo app. The I4C also stated that the app's control server has been geo-blocked to prevent any future activity from resuming.
Promotional channels and videos also blocked
The government's action was not limited to just the app. Four Telegram channels promoting Wingo, which had more than 150,000 users, were also shut down. In addition, more than 50 videos on YouTube that were promoting this app were also removed. The scam was being spread rapidly through these platforms. Over 10 million fraudulent SMS messages blocked
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, timely action prevented approximately 1.53 crore (15.3 million) fraudulent SMS messages from reaching people. Officials stated that this was an organized cyber fraud and it was crucial to completely eliminate it to protect ordinary citizens from harm.
India's strict stance on online gaming apps
India has previously taken a tough stance against suspicious gaming and gambling apps. Under new laws implemented last year, gambling-based apps were completely banned. Now, only skill-based games and e-sports platforms are legally permitted in the country. Clearly, the government is not willing to take any risks when it comes to digital security.
