Fake Messages: How to identify whether a message is real or fake? TRAI has shared this important information to help you avoid fraud..
Fraudsters use various tricks to target people, and one of them is fake messages. Many people fall for these fake messages, so to raise awareness, TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has posted on X (formerly Twitter) explaining how to differentiate between genuine and fake messages.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India posted on X that not all messages are genuine; anyone can send a message that looks official. This is why certain suffixes are used for genuine messages, such as -P, -S, -T, or -G. This means that if the message sender's header includes any of these suffixes, the message is genuine. P stands for Promotional, S for Service, T for Transactional, and G for Government, and these will appear at the end of the message header.
Update your KYC, or your account will be closed.
You have won a lottery of 50 lakhs, click on the link and fill in your bank details.
If you ever receive a message stating that your account will be closed due to incomplete KYC and asking you to click on a link to complete the KYC, understand that fraudsters are trying to trap you. Also, if you fall for the lure of 50 lakhs and share your bank account details, you could be defrauded, and your account could be emptied.
Along with the post, TRAI also shared a URL where you can check whether the SMS is from a legitimate source: smsheader.trai.gov.in. You can verify the SMS yourself on this website.
