Facebook-Instagram's New AI Tool Will Identify Underage Users Online! Find Out How It Works
Meta AI: This AI system from Meta does not directly identify an individual; instead, it attempts to interpret patterns and signals.
Meta AI: Meta Platforms has begun leveraging artificial intelligence to further tighten its age verification processes. The company—which operates Instagram and Facebook—has introduced a new AI system designed to identify users who are under the age of 13. According to the company, this technology looks for cues based on photos, videos, and user activity, while strictly prioritizing user privacy.
How Does the AI System Work?
Meta's AI system does not directly identify a specific individual; rather, it attempts to interpret patterns and signals. It analyzes general visual cues present in photos and videos—such as physical stature or body structure—and also reads posts, captions, bios, and comments to estimate the user's potential age.
The company has clarified that this is not a facial recognition system; meaning, it does not identify a specific individual, but merely provides an estimate of their probable age.
What Happens If the AI Flags You as Underage?
If the system determines that an account belongs to someone under the age of 13, immediate action may be taken, potentially resulting in the temporary deactivation of the account. To regain access, the user will be required to provide proof of their age. Currently, this feature is being piloted in a select number of countries—including the United States—and is expected to be gradually rolled out to other regions as well.
Similar Approach to Other Tools
Meta's new system bears some resemblance to third-party tools—such as Yoti and k-ID—that are already used for age estimation. These tools also estimate age based on visual cues without revealing the actual identity of the individual. Additionally, Meta has further enhanced its "Teen Accounts" feature; users aged 13 to 17 are automatically placed in this specific mode. Messages from strangers are restricted, and content filters are tightened. Features such as livestreaming are disabled for users under the age of 16. This feature was first introduced on Instagram and is now being implemented on Facebook as well.
Why, exactly, has this step been taken now?
This major change comes at a time when questions are being raised regarding child safety on Meta platforms. Recently, a U.S. court ruled against the company, stating that users were not provided with accurate information regarding the platform's safety measures. Consequently, the company was also slapped with a hefty fine. Against this backdrop, Meta's AI system is being viewed not merely as a new feature but as a necessary step taken amidst mounting pressure.
