Facebook and Instagram are making crores of rupees from fake ads, Meta is making money from them instead of stopping scams..
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has a long history of controversy. The social media giant is once again embroiled in controversy. Reuters reported that Meta earned $16 billion (approximately Rs. 1.33 lakh crore) in 2024 through allegedly fraudulent or misleading advertisements.
According to the report, these advertisements included scam advertisements such as illegal gambling, fake investment schemes, and banned medical products. This means they were created with the intention of directly deceiving users. The report, based on Meta's internal documents, estimated that approximately 10% of the company's annual revenue comes from such scam advertisements.
Meta Does Not Block Scam Ads
Reuters claimed in its report that Meta's algorithm scores whether an advertisement is fraudulent or not. Meta's algorithm does not block an advertisement unless it is 95% certain that the ad is fake. Additionally, the company allows such ads to run on its platform and charges a higher fee for them. This strategy benefits Meta the most. Many dubious advertisers continue to pay similar fees to keep the fake ads running.
This trend has been ongoing for three years.
The report states that the Meta platform is rife with such fraudulent and deceptive advertisements. These include advertisements for online betting sites and illegal betting platforms, fake investment schemes, fake crypto ads, banned medical products, and fake branded products. The fake ads have been running on Meta for the past three years.
Meta Denies
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone refuted the Reuters report, calling it selective and misleading. The company claimed that it has received 58 percent fewer reports of scam ads on its platform in the past 18 months, reducing the number of fraudulent ads by approximately 134 million. Meta also stated that it is continuously focusing on improving its ad review systems and transparency tools.
